TN: 2001 Louis Jadot Bonnes Mares

  • 2001 Louis Jadot Bonnes Mares - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru (11/25/2020)
It’s a rare treat to drink Bonnes Mares. I bought this bottle on release, before I knew much of anything about Burgundy. At least I knew enough to put it away for a long sleep. Holiday week in the time of COVID, while putting up the Christmas tree, I decided it was time. I opened the bottle, and poured a small glass to have while I was stringing lights on the tree. The aromatics were immediate and captivating, dark fruit and the heady scent of damp earth and fall leaves. Time brought out soy-like umami on the palate, buffering still present tannins. I kept going back to smell the wine, not even taking a sip. The aromas were too good. Three hours later the palate fanned out even more, with meaty, wild gaminess. The contrast of the ethereal perfume, and the wildness on the palate carried through dinner. The last few sips are still lingering in my glass, and I pick it up every so often to enjoy the aromas. I’ll eventually finish it…later.

Thnaks for the note. Had to check but I believe I have a bottle or two of this. My (poorly attended to) spreadsheet shows an '01 Jadot Moose as well. Now I wonder where they are lurking!
But I would expect the combo of Jadot and BM to be quite a substantial wine, which your note supports.

That’s the sort of experience that makes the chase worth it. Great note David.

Nice note. Bonnes Mares is one of Jadot’s best wines every year but needs lots of time. I believe Jadot’s Bonnes Mares comes primarily from the Clair Dau vineyard purchase in the mid 80s. I’ve had the 85 Jadot Bonnes Mares twice in the last few years and it was stunning both times as well. I’m glad that your patience with the 01 was rewarded.

That is correct. And the 84 and 85 Jadot BMs were made by Clair Dau but were part of the purchase.

Thanks for the lovely note, per usuum, David,

I have a younger one of these, so it’s good to know that it should be worth the wait.

Nice note David & glad it is drinking well. I see so much swing about better '01 Cote de Nuits wines. Some shining, others disappointing. For me it’s one of those vintages that’s hard to get a handle on where it is. '06 is a bit the same for me.

Saved a glass for tonight. Sipping on it before dinner. There are more openings into the flavor crevices than were apparent yesterday. It’s lost some of that strength that I love in Bonnes Mares, but it’s gained an additional measure of grace. There’s a touch of bottle sweetness on the finish as well. Pick your preference.

Perhaps it’s best to let bottles sit a little longer, or give them more air.
