2002 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon- France, Champagne (10/27/2010)
The early reports are this wine sure do hit it on the head. This is a very fine young vintage for Dom. Very light yellow color. Exquisite bubbles. An awesome nose, loaded with minerals, apples, green apples, creamy-toasty notes, and a touch of flowers. In the mouth, explosive and youthful, racing across the palate and fanning out with its sublime apple and citrus fruit, some yeasty brioche, and a powerful kick of mineral-laden acidity. Profound finish. This might not be on the level of the 1996, but it is pretty darn close. A
I may have to try this… I’ve never been a huge fan of Dom… I prefer Salon, but I think I should give this a shot before the price point starts moving up…
Jim – I felt like this wine was more akin to the Salon 1997 than most Doms would be. I usually of Dom as more elegant and lighter on its feet, but it makes a pretty fair comparison to the Salon 97, I think, because it seems like the 02 is a bit bigger Dom, in my estimation, while the Salon 97 is a lighter Salon.
Love that 1997 Salon. A tremendous wine. I wouldn’t say the Dom compares directly, but it’s probably as close a comparison as you’re going to find between the two going back to 1990 … so if not, you at least can blame me. Sounds like a win win!
