TN: 2005 Château de Coulaine Chinon Clos de Turpenay

  • 2005 Château de Coulaine Chinon Clos de Turpenay - France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon (5/24/2009)
Do I hate it when I mess up with my inventory…I thought I had three left, forgot that I had already had one, and now, I am down to only one bottle of course. Well, at least this was an amazing wine. Dark, brooding, and ferocious right out of the bottle, this smoothed out over the course of a day or two and the blackberry and currant fruit really fanned out on the palate. Earthy, tobacco, a hint of green bell pepper and crushed rock taste. And of course a little baking soda flavor when the wine was first opened, which I find typical of very young Chinon. This has the structure and fruit to go the distance. I don’t think this will drink at peak for at least 10 years and it’ll keep for many more years after that. What a great wine.

Thanks for the note Steffen. 2005 seems to be a great vintage for Loire reds. Wish I had bought more.

Yep. I bought a bunch and still think I should have bought more. The problem is that production isn’t really that massive, so backfilling may be difficult. Either way, this is a rock star wine.

Maybe CSW screwed up and sent you the Picasses which is killer too, albeit a bit more structured and stoney but still has vivacious fruit.

Thanks, I think i have a couple of these. Still plenty of 05 Loire reds out there that are very good and quite ageable.

Nice to see you here Lyle!

Lyle.

No mistakes. I purchased both the Turpenay and Picasses. Have not tried Picasses yet, though.

Loren,

Was here in January for a bit but now I’m back. Had to see what this board’s reaction to the wine internet meltdown…and I might post some TN’s one day. [gen_fro.gif]

Picasses will age longer and for my palate is more interesting, albeit they are both wonderful wines.

You need to buy Baudry Croix Boissee '06. Better than 2005.

Thanks for the tip. I got the 05, but I’ll add 06 to the lineup.

It is so freeing to tell someone to buy something and not get harassed by everybody and their mother. Thank goodness for WB’ers! Not that I am affiliated with a retail store anymore. Well Garagiste in a minor capacity. But it damn feels good.

While I’m on that you should also buy the 2005 Guion B. Prestige that Chambers has. Awesome $15 wine. Just a notch below Breton.
