2006 Château Maucoil Châteauneuf-du-Pape Privilège - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (7/6/2009)
– popped and poured, then decanted and consumed over the next 2 hours –
– tasted non-blind –
NOSE: strong raspberry; gentle hints of spice and anise; very slight citrus note. Still a bit tight.
BODY: garnet-purple color of medium-deep depth; medium bodied.
TASTE: juicy fruits and a hint of leather; spicy cured meat: pepperoni or salami; very slight gaminess; a bit tannic on the finish, but this is well-balanced; 15% alc.; hole in mid palate; moderately intense finish; somewhat simple now, but I feel like this could be very good in a few years. “88” as it drinks today, “90+” with further development.
B: 50, 5, 12, 15, 8 = (90 pts.)
and a couple other short impressions …

2000 Royal Tokaji Wine Co. Tokaji Aszú 3 Puttonyos - Hungary, Hegyalja, Tokaji (7/6/2009)
– tasting note from 1 glass at restaurant –
– tasted non-blind over 30 minutes –
NOSE: light bouquet of dates, lacquer, and brown twigs.
BODY: medium-full bodied; tawny color.
TASTE: sweet, but noticeably not as sweet as a 5 or 6. Golden raisins dominates this simple flavor profile; medium length finish. The step up to a 5 puttonyos is very worth it, IMO. In contrast, recently, I was hardly able to tell the difference in quality between a $30 5 putt. and a $90 6 putt. I don’t know how much a bottle of this 3 putt. cost, but I wouldn’t be a buyer unless the price is under $20. No detailed score, but gut impression tells me this is in the mid 80’s.

2006 Chateau St. Jean Pinot Noir Durell Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County (7/4/2009)
– popped and poured –
– tasted non-blind over 2 hours –
Spicy and oaky bouquet with some cranberry and pomegranate fruit peaking through as well as a generic fresh flowers scent. Ruby core turning to burnt sienna at the edges - color is of medium-light depth, and the wine is also medium-light bodied. The palate is tart, and way too alcoholic (the 14.6% alc. is quite noticeable). Very disappointing, especially since the '05 Durell was one of our favorites while tasting at the winery. Honestly, their regular, sub-$20, 2006 Pinot is better than this horrible waste of $40. Not scored, but gut impression tells me low 80’s.
