TN: 2007 Alois Kracher Pinot Gris Illmitz (Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee)

  • 2007 Alois Kracher Pinot Gris Illmitz - Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee (7/10/2009)
nose: real nice zesty, clear, and precise nose of lemon zest, minerals, some tropical citrus tones, bits of pears. and some sour apple tones

taste: real good light feel with nice medium acidity. Well balanced and zesty tones of pears, lemon zest, minerals and bits of tropical citrus

overall: a real quality wine that has a nice lingering zesty citrus finish. Its hard to believe that this is only $13 as this shows the class that one would expect from kracher and is a perfect food compliment along with being really tasty on its own (89 pts.)

Can any of the Kracher fanboys explain to me the origin of these lllmitz wines?

Bought grapes? Pre-harvests? What made them do dry wines or did they always and just not market them?

A.

I think they’ve only started making this in the last few years. Making boytrisized wines is a gamble and some years they don’t produce any (2003), so it is an effort to diversify (along with their wine-soaked cheese, chocolate and Mr. K wines). Not sure if they own the plots, but they are surely not located too near the vines for the stickies on the shore of the lake. It is so damp in the mornings that even the reds develop botrytis.

Planning to serve a '98 Kracher Chardonnay No. 9 TBA tomorrow…can’t wait!

What became of the “Days of Wine and Roses” label?

Judging from Wine-Searcher Pro, it looks like it’s being sold now as a Rose in Austria - did Vin Divino decide to drop it for the USA market?

Or is “Illmitz” the new “Days of Wine and Roses”?
