TN: 2007 Viña Santa Rita Cabernet Sauvignon Medalla Real Reserva Especial Single Estate

I like to pick up Chilean reds at Costco from time to time. They go one of two routes: over-oaked, over-extracted mess, or modern, complex black currant nectar. This was the latter, thankfully. Maybe a bit glossy for some. But for $15 this puts a smile on my face.

Violets, black currant, black cherry and tobacco on the nose. Dark fruits, creamy texture but with medium acidity to balance. Iron flavor, medium/full body. Ripe and plentiful tannins. Tar, black fruit, mocha and tobacco finish with mild heat. Far more complexity and classy texture than a $15 Cab has any business showing. Plenty of structure to age on, too.

Apparently 70k cases are produced yearly, so who knows how consistent this will be from lot to lot. But whatever batch this came from is killer juice. This bottle was legit top end Cab I suspect you could toss into a flight of $30-$50 Napa Cabs and have it more than hold its own. (91 pts.)
