TN: 2017 SummitVine Cabernet Sauvignon SummitVine Ranch Estate Diamond Mountain (killer!)

Admittedly, I was first keyed into this winery when I read a review online from Wine Spectator, in the Insider newsletter. I frequently browse the wines and scores and am mostly looking for price outliers. After seeing countless Napa Cabs and blends in the $200+ space, I noticed a very strong 94-point James Molesworth review for a wine that was supposedly only $70 or so. Wow…that’s something! Frequently, those high score yet inexpensive wines are either not importaed to the US in quantity or, if they’re domestic, they’re on mailing lists that have long since been closed. I checked anyway and was pleased to find that the wine was truly only $72, but it was also available on the site. So, I ordered a few. Wow! I was really impressed and have since ordered some of the 2016 to try. If you haven’t tried this label and are a fan of Cali Cab, do yourself a favor and buy some. It’s excellent. Here’s my TN from CT:

This is the new QPR star for Napa Cabernet, for me. Wow, this was good. Dark fruit envelops the palate, but it’s far from overripe and gloppy, and it’s lifted by great structure and complex notes of non-fruit things. Long, perfectly balanced finish. There was occasionally a tiny hint of alcohol on the nose, but that was hardly a detractor. Just fantastic, and I’m off to buy more now. (93 pts.)

Have you continued with SummitVine? Thoughts on the producer?

I have, a few bottles of each wine each release. I really enjoy them when I want a Cali Cab or blend that isn’t, “Old School,” but also isn’t over-the-top (to my palate). I liken them to Pride Mountain.
