2019 Evesham Wood Pinot Noir Le Puits Sec - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills (10/23/2022)
1 hr decant. It’s been many years since I have had a Evesham Wood Pinot, and based upon this bottle, I intend to make amends for this. I think like many Pinots of the vintage, the fruit does lean dark technically, spicy black currants and the like. But the energy and spirit is that of those fruits in the red spectrum, hopefully this makes sense. Expansive palate coverage, caressing even, lovely lift on the finish. A bit tight though, but cellar this with confidence, I see great days ahead. (93 points)
A 2010 Cuvee J (barrel selection from LPS) that I hadn’t had for many years was recently so harmonious and enjoyable that i had to immediately buy some 2019, which is on deck for tonight.
Sounds amazing Stan, and I too will be securing some 19 Cuvee J in the near future. I have 2 bottles of the 08 J, which I have every reason to believe it is going to be spectacular when I get around to opening it.
I like Evesham Wood. The current owner/winemaker has tried to maintain a similar style to the Raneys. He and his wife also have the Haden Fig label. I haven’t yet had enough of those wines to understand any stylistic differences from Evesham Wood.
The '19 Cuvee J started out seemingly quite oaky with high-toned cherry aromas and tight, but settled in nicely after an hour like you say. Silky but rather noticeable tannin, the rest of these will be heading to storage.
I find that pretty much all Eola Amity Pinots have that darker color even if made on the elegant side. Walter Scott’s do as well. For red fruited Oregon Pinot, I go for Dundee.
