TN: 2019 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese #5

Absolutely, provided that you are open to a sweeter wine. If you are not a fan of residual sugar in wine, then you should start with drier rieslings. Unless you are in a very restricted shipping state, sourcing shouldn’t be a problem. Wine Searcher is currently showing 19 vendors for the 2019.

Alex, no Wehleners yet, the Sonnenuhr Spätlese might be next; I’ll report.

On to the Wehlener Sonnenunhr Spat (bottle has been open for 2 days):
very direct and strong smell of pink grapefruit, then underlying creaminess.
Much sweeter than the Kabinetts, less complex, undeveloped, some smokyness (typical of the vineyard?).
intense sweetness and acidity, not exactly elegant, flirting with Auslese territory.

I actually prefer the Juffer Sonnenuhr (more fruit, less cream), but that’s a matter of taste.

I just realized, that lower drinking temperature (10-12 C) brings more playfulness and drinkability, keeps the sweewetness in check.
