What A Classic Forum! I So Love This Board! Stirring the Hornets Nest!

I don’t know why but every now and again, I visit the Winespectator Board. Please don’t ask me why. I’m a glutton for punishment. Being that they don’t require you to use your real name, you have jokers over there that will say just about anything. They’ll curse your wife, call your daughter a whore, even threaten to run over your dog and all while hiding behind silly monikers. Well I stirred the hornet’s nest tonight. There’s likely some dual board members here but for those that don’t peruse…here’s a taste. Guess I’m bored tonight but the 97 Insignia is keeping things in line. I’m just glad this board requires names. Thanks Mr. French!

I agree with your points on the other board. People tend to do or say things with a cloak of anonymity that they might not otherwise say.

How is the Insignia drinking?

Hey fuck you Eric! [oops.gif] newhere

[snort.gif] Funny Steve you drunkin bastard. Oh…the Insignia is killer. Buy it up if/when possible.

Steve, are we doing lunch this week since last week fell apart?

I’ve had the 2005 only but I thought about trying to find a couple of older vintages.

I did like the suggestion for everyone to use porn names. I think I’ll call myself Jeremy Holmes.

How about Justin Timbercock?

I was so pissed that that other guy thought of Gigond Ass before I did.

I stopped posting on that board because of those things you cite (eh not “site” as Board-O posts). The real names thing has been brought up endless times on that board and users come up with the most ridiculous reasons why they need to hide behind their handles. That dude Board-O is a real mensch rolleyes : Him (guessing it’s a male) and a few others run that board like it’s their own. They have even managed to chase off Winespectator writers from posting there. Those writers now pretty much only post on their blogs where REAL NAMES are required to post a comment or response. I wouldn’t shed a tear if Marvin decided to shutter that forum, I might even do a little dance.

I think it silly that grown men/women go on a board and hide behind pretend names. I realize that we all can be a bit childish, but to go into a fake world where you are your avatar and have no idea of reality, grow up.
I like the fact that you have to at least use your real name, I enjoy seeing pictures of folks and the tastings, it makes it more personal and real and adds to the overall conversation of wine.
And…I have never been to the WS board before and I don’t think I ever would after reading that short post. Bord-O, Gigond ass, clever but I can just see the images of those folks now…and it ain’t pretty.

I’m still trying to think of my porn name though, Spoodge McF**k, I don’t know sounds childish…

This might help you:

That’s his real login, isn’t it? I was going to mention that the drawback of a real names forum is that you can’t have a name like Gigond Ass.

Board-O and Gigond Ass are the Beavis and Butthead of the Wine Spectator board, if Beavis and Butthead drank 1928 Bordeaux on a regular basis.

Wow - that was a troll of a move you pulled right there.

Over the last 8 years, I’ve been a regular/follower on WS, Vinocellar, WinoDepot, ebob, and have tried to get into the vibe here at WB. However, for some reason the “elitism” oozes out of this board moreso than ebob ever did… and it’s threads like this that cause that feeling.

What purpose did this serve?

The problem does not seem to be whether the board uses real names or not; at least, that is not the whole problem. The CT forum does not have a real names policy and everyone there is very polite and friendly. (I lurk there regularly.) The problem at WS seems either “cultural” (people expect to dish out and receive very rude/coarse posts) or “personal” (it is dominated by a few ill-mannered persons). The CT forums had a thread a few months back about how aggressive and abrasive WS is to anyone remotely seen as a newcomer. Forget the issue of real names; I would not post and do not lurk there because the WS community does not appeal to me.

Elitism? That’s gotta be a first to describe this place! Ummm, pray tell, how do you arrive at that conclusion?

Oh and as far as pr0n names: C0ck Rôtie [snort.gif]

Does that mean “roasted cock”?

I do agree with the comment in that thread that not all boards need be the same. My first wine board was the Squires board before it was a real names board. I think I used something clever like “Ken V”, but maybe it was “tannin head”. Anyway, after some time on both kinds, I just avoid those that aren’t real names. And that thread gives good evidence as to why.

Not only does this board have a real names policy and an offline forum, but also the great BerserkerFests. There is no way that boards like the Spectator board could ever have the sense of community that this board has. Perhaps that is what Mr. Oglesby mistakes for elitist?
