For me the sweet spot is clearly 1er. Sure I’d like to own and drink more Grand Crus, but the price and quality difference keep me away. I’ve come to think that a lot of the better 1ers are better than more expensive grand crus from other producers. Of course I used to buy more GCs when the price gap wasn’t so huge (40% in 2012 vs 4% in 2019).
Honestly I’m not sure which village is my favorite. I used to try to buy Gevrey/Chambolle/Vosne/Volnay more or less evenly as I really liked them all and prize diversity. Plus some MSD and NSG but I liked those a little less. Over the last 5+ years though Vosne has been moving down and others up, especially the relatively better values in Volnay and NSG.
What village do people think makes the best village-level wines? I’m not talking necessarily about the most expensive ones (e.g., Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanee), but the village that, across the board, offers strong village wines from a number of quality producers.
I might go with Gevrey-Chambertin or Nuits-St-Georges, but interested in others’ thoughts.
