What to pair with Raclette?

The local shop* lets you borrow the heating device when you buy Raclette, so we’re going to try it for the first time tonight, before the snow melts. I have no Swiss wine, but have some nearby mountain whites. Which of these three would you suggest as a pairing?

2014 Domaine Courbet CdJura Chardonnay “Les Isles”
2011 Didier Grappe CdJura Savagnin “Ouille”
2017 Domaine de L’Idylle Cruet Savoie

I’ve done Domaine de L’Idylle Cruet Savoie in the past and worked great so I would go with that. Enjoy the Raclette!

Sorry, not familiar the wines. But raclette is also considered a regional specialty of the the savoie in France. So you should be fine. Enjoy, I’m jealous.

I’d go for Savoie for sure. Dry and fruity whites with good acidity work well, lighter reds (=not jammy/alcoholic/heavy) are a good choice too.

All three could be nice - they’re pretty different styles! I don’t have experience with these particular wines but in general: The savoie would be the classic pairing, fruity, soft and unintrusive - and useful if you have cornichons and onions along with the cheese - but probably the least complex of the wines. The Savagnin should be pretty dramatic and intense with lots of acidity and sherry-like notes. The Chardonnay will probably be fairly middle of the road and emphasizing fruit over oak and acidity.

Domaine de L’Idylle Cruet Savoie. Jacquere works well with raclette (and mac and cheese).

I guess I’m the only one here who doesn’t like l’Idylle. Although any Savoyard sounds like it should be fine, I’d just shoot for something crisp/zippy to cut through all the oil. The last time we had raclette (plus a fondue) at the French Alpine Bistro, I had a big red from the Midi which was good, but not zippy enough.

Be careful with all the raclette equipment, especially if lots of wine is involved…

Definitely the Savoie, especially if the cheese is the French version, though today the French hyper markets are selling “raclette” made up in Normandy. The best raclette is without a doubt made in the Valais (Switzerland) in which case you would want a Petite Arvine, Heidi, Chasselas, or Humagne Blanche. Best pairings from the Savoie side would be Apremont or Chignin-Bergeron.

Thanks for all the tips. Turns out the 2017 Cruet I thought I had handy was buried further in my pile of boxes than I thought, but I had a bottle of the L’Idylle’s 2018 Cruet VV within reach, so we went with that, and it was a most excellent pairing. Thanks again!
