Wine barrels for decoration....

We have a few wine barrels for decoration in our home…and one in the wine cellar used as a kind of table…I’m sure you’ve seen some of my TN pics?? [wink.gif]

Am sure a lot of you use barrels in the home? Anyone have some cool ones from high end wineries? A drc barrel…screagle barrel…sqn…? I think it would be VERY cool to have a barrel from a producer that I love! “yea…that was a barrel that contained the 1999 La Tache juice”!!! [worship.gif] Wonder how hard it would be to get such barrels…do they sell them…how much???

What wine barrel would you want?

Fun thoughts! [drinkers.gif]

I’ve always wondered that myself - I’d like a barrel for my cellar, but want a really cool one from a favorite producer.

I was told from one of our clubs that they do sell the barrels so I’m on “the list” next time they have empties. One of the guys that works there, buys them to send them though the chipper and use on his grill. Another winery I asked said they used to sell them to the public, now they all go to a company that makes they stuff they sell in their gift shop.

I would prefer stainless.

I believe they are all sold, not sure where, probably other domaines. Have never seen one available, though it is fairly to find for sale the wood boxes DRC is shipped in.

each barrel holds 300 bottles or 25 cases. With 99 DRC LT worth about $3300/bottle, that’s $1,000,000 worth of wine that each barrel held–wonder what the RC barrels held in value? Probably about $5,000,000 of wine. I tasted 99 DRC at the domaine in barrel and would love to have one barrel for myself–probably over a decade too late to ask.

Ask Rudy and John.
Rudy apparently has two barrels, one to decorate his new digs and another to wear while showering.

Many wineries sell their used barrels through these people. Shipping one barrel from Napa to Chicago or Philadelphia…not cheap and a big pain in the rear.

As I recall, DRC sands off their logo etc before the used barrels are sold.

10 years ago, I contacted Mark Bixler at Kistler (and still a favourite winery of mine) who was happy to sell me a used barrel and shipped it by UPS. He couldn’t have been more helpful and the barrel is an important fixture of my cellar.

Watching the UPS driver wheel the barrel (which was tightly wrapped in plastic) down the driveway is a lasting memory. But the ultimate experience was when I pulled the duct tape off of the bung hole - it was a Pinot Noir barrel and my cellar smelled of a real winery for a couple of weeks.

These are almost unattainable in Louisiana. I have been envious of the apparent availability of nice looking wine barrels along the West Coast.

You can find horrifically beat-up Bourbon barrels at Home Depot or Lowe’s on occasion.

I see from the site I posted at Au Bon Climat has hundreds of very used barrels available for virtually nothing.

$35 was it??

I don’t see the benefit to the home decorator of buying hardly used Shafer barrels for $200+.
