Hi all,
Looking for suggestions on a wine to pair with a traditional St. Patrick’s Day dinner tonight – corned beef, Yukon gold potatoes, carrots & celery, boiled cabbage and Irish soda bread. The beef was marinated in a brine that included peppercorns, mustard seeds and coriander, then slow-cooked (not roasted).
Was thinking of an Alsatian Riesling or a rose but am open to suggestions. Thanks, and Happy St. Patrick’s Day! ![cheers [cheers.gif]](/uploads/db3686/original/2X/0/0ff9bfcdb0964982cd3240b6159868fbdf215b1a.gif)
Guiness! ![winner [winner.gif]](/uploads/db3686/original/2X/0/07ec25c9fd71159fe15d7f1ba5fad64e91238d0e.gif)
Tough pairing, but I happen to be doing an Alsatian riesling – 2005 Weinbach Schlossberg Cuvée Ste. Catherine. I was looking around trying to find some info on pairing, and a number of folks said, yes, Guiness or other beer (which was my first thought, but the people we’re dining with want wine). A number of people suggested a crisp white (due to the saltiness and spice of the corned beef) such as sauvignon blanc, pinot gris, dry riesling or dry gewurz. So I settled for the Alsatian. Other suggestions I saw were Beaujolais or a lighter pinot noir. Good luck!
Not that I’d recomend this for everyone, but I actually drink barbaresco with my corned beef dinner.
I love the zesty acidity of Alsatians to cut through the fat of slow cooked meats, especially when they have some tang to them from either a vinegar base or spice. But then again I’ll drink an Alsatian with Mac 'N Cheese and be thrilled…
2004 Red Burgundy. Green Meanies and all that… We had a 2004 Chevillon Nuits St George Village with a similar menu (Corned Beef, Cabbage, Carrots, Soda Bread)…it was fine
i like some mosel auslese, but that 2004 burgundy sounds nice. i’ve enjoyed some burgundy with irish dinner before, especially with some rich corned beef. yum.
05 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Spatlese. Went very nicely.
I’m a little late, but only one wine works: Vinho Verde
… and it comes in white and red! ![scratch [scratch.gif]](/uploads/db3686/original/2X/4/42a16863a8714da3c1604419e3eb9206bb87aa50.gif)
