VINEXPO CHIEF SAYS INTERNET “NOT THE RIGHT MEDIUM” FOR WINE SALES. In a new report from Decanter, Vinexpo ceo Robert Beynat said the internet will “never be anything other than a marginal circuit for sales.” He went on to say that “the internet is not the right medium for the sale of wines and spirits, it is not a real alternative to traditional sales circuits and will never reach more than around 8% of the market.”
Mr. Beynat must be counting on time to stand still - Boomers to maintain their current majority as wine buyers, and Millenials to remain in their 20’s and poor…
Fear not Daniel, internet wine sales will become a larger and larger part of industry sales (especially in the $20+ segment) as us web savvy youngsters become the majority - both in numbers and buying power.
To be fair, isn’t he talking about wineries selling to the trade? I know for a fact that we are never going to buy wines over the net as opposed to going to trade fairs and visiting producers to taste the wines.
“I went to the Theise tasting on Friday. Imagine a setup where I was- either via an audio feed or some kind of software turning my speech into the written word- providing live tasting notes to customers as I tasted the wines, with the ability to look at the playback later.”
But, Tom, YOU still want to go and taste the wines and meet and talk with Terry and his producers, right? That is what this guy is getting at.
That was supposedly Thomas J. Watson, IBM’s founder but it’s been tough to substantiate. Ditto Bill Gates’ quip about no one ever needing more than 640KB of RAM.
However, Ken Olsen, founder of Digitial Equipment did coin this gem in 1977: “There is no reason for any individual to have a computer in his home.”
