The Favre-a-thon 4.0 took place this weekend in San Francisco. Jon will likely start a thread, but I’ll get us started with Friday night’s Champagne and whites. Friday’s reds now added.
FARVE-A-THON 4.0 - (7/10/2015)
-
1985 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut - France, Champagne
Initially bright, and very likable. However, it faded quite a bit during dinner. -
1990 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut - France, Champagne
An interesting bottle, in a perplexing sort of way. I got very little on the nose, and found it extremely reserved relative to other bottles consumed over the years. Some at the table liked it very much and thought I was bonkers (which may also be true). -
1989 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut - France, Champagne
A number of us, including me, tend to under-appreciate 89 Krug (Vintage, Mesnil, Collection). However, this bottle was fantastic, and was easily the best 89 Krug I’ve ever had. -
1996 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut - France, Champagne
The 96 Krug simply killed it. So precise. The 96 has always been stellar, and tonight’s bottle was no exception.
-
1988 Krug Champagne Clos du Mesnil - France, Champagne, Le Mesnil Sur Oger, Champagne
We started our Mesnil fight with 1988, which is always a star. Tonight’s bottle was no exception, and took us to a step above where we had been in the vintage flight. Classy juice. -
1998 Krug Champagne Clos du Mesnil - France, Champagne, Le Mesnil Sur Oger, Champagne
Good bottle, but slotted between the 88 and 00 didn’t allow it to shine. -
2000 Krug Champagne Clos du Mesnil - France, Champagne, Le Mesnil Sur Oger, Champagne
The 00 Mesnil was very, very good. I’ve really enjoyed all of the 00 Krugs of late, and this bottle rocked it. -
2003 Krug Champagne Clos du Mesnil - France, Champagne, Le Mesnil Sur Oger, Champagne
My first bottle of 03 Mesnil, and it didn’t move me.
-
1995 Krug Champagne Clos d’Ambonnay - France, Champagne, Ambonnay, Champagne
Our lone Ambonnay, but it didn’t need company. While great on release, this champagne has moved to a whole new level of late. World class.
-
1991 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
The 91 Raveneua Clos was a real treat, and a lovely wine. An initial odd note fully dissipated, and this blossomed over the long dinner. -
2007 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Young, but very delicious. Don’t hesitate to pop the cork on this if you have a few.
-
1980 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
The 80 GE was slightly corked, which was really a shame, as the bottle was in great condition. -
1980 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Gorgeous and off the charts good. A happy counterpoint to the corked 80 GE. -
2001 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
I’ve always liked the 01 vintage for La Tache, and this bottle was beautiful. Lovely wine, that paired quite well with the otherworldly 80 RSV.
-
1991 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Showed nice, but under-performed what this vintage is capable of. -
2000 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
A very good bottle, that outperformed. A strong tobacco note. -
2006 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Umm, I seem to have lost my note for the 06 RSV. Any help?
-
1998 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
Somewhat sterile, and this didn’t move me. As a red burg vintage, 98 hasn’t been doing as much for me lately. -
2002 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
I really like 2002 GE. This bottle was good, but presented much younger and tighter than is typical. -
2008 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
Nice juice, that was surprisingly accessible. Floral, spice. Youthful and primary, but delish. A lot of potential here. -
2006 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Our lone Echezeaux entry tonight. The word “yummy” jumped out from a number of folks, including me. This wine has improved, and is much more approachable than a few years back.
-
2005 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
Dark, deep, rich, and clearly will be a stud. Young, but we took one for the team.
We also had the 89 and 11 Richebourg, but I didn’t get notes. A little help??
